Romina and her band gave us a definitive lesson in this regard last night: a raw, brazen, and subversive show, with the ghosts of Janis, Koko, and Aretha (thankfully not a literal ghost yet) shifting restlessly in the background.

A specialized repertoire driven by a challenging, deeply expressive voice that, once it gets inside you, inevitably takes complete possession. And if you think 'Piece of My Heart' is a commonplace cover, it is only because you evidently were not here last night: it was no simple feat to remain faithful to the original while rendering it in such a uniquely personal and incisive manner.
